He produces occasional speculative pieces, otherwise working entirely to commission. The intrigue to Guilded is Morton-Evans’ surgical precision and ability to produce work more akin to sculpture than the functional furniture it is. As a cabinet maker Morton-Evans strives for elegance and beauty in the form of functional furniture. As an artist he is primarily interested in the elicitation of an emotional response, because that response has the capacity to reveal to the onlooker something about their perceptions and their preconceptions.
The majority of his designs explore the synergy between cabinetmaking and organic morphology; his choice of woods reflecting the subject, such as the use of bleached sycamore to replicate bone.
Collectors and buyers of Morton-Evans’ work appreciate the intense response elicited by his pieces, and consider his work intersecting art and functional furniture to the extent that they become hard to distinguish.

In our opinion, the key to understanding British craftsmanship today is in appreciating the extent to which many of our craftsmen are not just makers or designers in their own right. Many approach design and making from an artistic perspective and in so doing fudge the traditional boundaries between designer and craftsman and artist. Morton Evans’ work can challenge some tastes, but as with all work of artistic merit it is appreciating that which is exceptionally good from that which is indifferent or making a statement for the sake of it.
Guilded is therefore delighted to present a limited number of designs by Morton-Evans for sale. These can be viewed at guilded.1stdibs.com |
